As we start looking into the fall and our mindsets turn from summer holidays and relaxation to routines and business; we want to ask our community can you spare some time? Can you help with a few hours on occasion or a few times a month? We are seeing increased demand on our Not-For-Profit sector, especially around human services. We are also experiencing staffing shortages, just like many industries and we are all working towards recruitment and succession planning.

As not-for-profit agencies, our governance boards are vital in assisting with the planning and establishing of the best policies, procedures and helping senior leadership focus on the organizations mission and principles. There are 2 types of boards, a governance board or a working board; but both need members that are independent of the agency; a board with various experience and backgrounds; and members that are professional and understand their accountability as part of the board.

Governance Boards are responsible for overseeing the organization and sets direction and controls through policy. Paid staff lead and implement the programs and services, in line with the board’s delegated direction. Working Boards are responsible for both the governance of the organization, as well as providing volunteer staffing to complete the actual work of the organization. Governance Boards are usually more established, larger not-for-profit agencies and Working Boards are smaller organization with little or no staff. We are seeing an increase in vacancies in our boards, and this can cause some long-term shortages of programs and services and worst case, closure of an agency if they cannot fulfill their CRA requirements.
